After months of rumors and speculation among fans of Doctor Who, amped by odds placed online by bookies in the UK, the BBC has finally announced Matt Smith‘s successor. Peter Capaldi is now the next Doctor to take the helm of the TARDIS, and the resulting announcement will be sure to spur much discussion among fans online.
Peter Capaldi is no stranger to the Whoniverse. He had a role in The Fires Of Pompeii, and also played politician John Frobisher in Torchwood: Children Of Earth. It’s not unprecedented for an actor previously in Doctor Who to land the title role – Colin Baker, the Sixth Doctor, is one famous example of this. What is surprising though is that Capaldi was the top pick of the bookies, marking perhaps the first time they got it right!
The new Doctor will be facing an interesting challenge in the coming months, with the 2013 Christmas Special scheduled to be his first episode. And although now Moffat has finally made this revelation, it is still uncertain as to whether Peter Capaldi is actually the Twelfth Doctor or the Thirteenth Doctor, now that the recent series finale threw legendary John Hurt in the mix as a previously unseen Doctor. [UPDATE: BBC sent out a press release that stated that Capaldi will be the Twelfth Doctor.]
The Geeks of Doom podcast, TARDISblend, will be posting an episode discussing the news of the new Doctor.
What do you think of Peter Capaldi as the next Doctor?

The last few days I was watching Torchwood and really liked him in season 3.
This will be interesting, I’m excited to see him as the Doctor.
