Vamplets, Vol. 1 tells the story of Destiny Harper. A young lady, who is floating through life. She can’t figure out what she wants to do but she knows she has a knack with children and a taste for the occult. This makes her the perfect fit to be the new Governess for the Nightcare Nursery.
Just like the toys the comic is based on, this story is adorable. There really isn’t any other way to phrase it. The art style is cute and inviting and the story feels straight out of a early morning anime cartoons like Honey Honey only with an occult twist.
The characters are imaginative, entertaining, and well developed in a very short amount of time. In part, this is because of the art. Well drawn, not only the emotion but the personalities are shown on the page. It makes it very easy to understand who each of these characters are with very few words.
What is the best part though, this is a fun read for both adults and kids. A light-hearted intro into comics for someone about to hit middle school, it is easy to see how they could latch on to the characters and get hooked, especially girls who might have shied away from comics.
A fun start to a new series, now that everyone is in Gloomvania, the adventures Destiny will get to have chasing after the vamplets will prove to be even more entertaining than the first.
