Recently, Disney has turned to adapting their animated features into live-action films. Alice In Wonderland set the foundation for upcoming titles like Maleficent and Sleeping Beauty, and now the studio is prepping for yet another live-action film based on one of their famed villainesses.
According to The Hollywood reporter, Disney has just hired Cinderella and The Devil Wears Prada screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna to write the script for Cruella. As you may have guessed, the film will center on Cruella de Vil, animal cruelty extraordinaire and villainess of 101 Dalmatians.
This isn’t the first time we’ve seen the character in a live-action format. In 1996, Glenn Close brought the character to life in the live-action version of 101 Dalmatians, and reprised her role in 2000 for its sequel, 102 Dalmatians.
In fact, Close will be brought in as an executive producer for the new film. Producer Andrew Gunn (Sky High, Bedtime Stories) is also attached.
While the studio isn’t disclosing any details about the film itself, like Maleficent, the movie will most likely profile Cruella’s character.
With Disney casting actresses like Angelina Jolie, Cate Blanchett, Helena Bonham Carter, and even Glenn Close all playing live-action versions of villains, it looks like the studio will likely be eyeing actresses who are just as high profile. It’s unknown what the studio is looking for age-wise considering they are keeping the story details under tight wraps.
