Jeffrey Katzenberg Offered $75 Million For Three More Episodes Of Breaking Bad

How much would you be willing to pay for more Breaking Bad episodes? Any amount would sound reasonable at this point, but since the series has come to a close, it would seem futile to shell out money.

However, Jeffrey Katzenberg, head of DreamWorks Animation, was willing to pay up to $75 million for three more episodes of Breaking Bad. But that was before he knew how the series would come to an end.

During a keynote speech at Mipcom, Katzenberg revealed an interesting idea on how he would extend the show’s life expectancy.

“I had this crazy idea. I was nuts for the show. I had no idea where this season was going. The last series cost about $3.5 million an episode. So they would make more profit from these three shows than they made from five years of the entire series. I said (to them), “˜I’m going to create the greatest pay-per-view television event for scripted programming anybody’s ever done.”

He explained that he had intended to show the three additional episodes as six-minute segments over 30 days online.

Now saying that these six-minute segmented episodes is “the greatest pay-per-view television event for scripted programming anybody’s ever done,” may be going a bit too far. A six-minute episode for 99 cents is way too expensive in my opinion. You can get a a full length episode of Breaking Bad in standard definition for $1.99 o $2.99 in HD on iTunes. Why would I pay a dollar for something that can be misconstrued as webisode?

Luckily this idea did not come to fruition. For one thing, the last three episodes basically answered all of the major questions that needed to be answered. Three additional ones would only answer questions like what happened to Huell at the safehouse? Did someone finish that Dimple Pinch that Walter White left behind? Does Saul Goodman really become a manager of a Cinnabon in Nebraska? Does it really cost $50,000 for a supply run/trip to Costco? Where can I get a laser pointer that powerful? I could go on and on, but you get my point. But really there would be no need for three episodes, especially with how the series ended.

What are your thoughts? Would you be willing to pay for new Breaking Bad?

  1. Ego maniac. He would shell out the money to keep the show on because he loves the show SOOOO MUCH and can’t bear to see it end. While everyone in cast and crew have moved on and planned their lives post-BB. What a jerk. Suck it up dude. The normal person has to live with great shows that get cancelled all the time because of jerks like him.
