The CW Beauty and the Beast

The CW had a panel in the Main Stage auditorium on Saturday at New York Comic-Con 2013 for their series Beauty and the Beast, the network’s reimagining of the 1987 television series of the same name that starred Linda Hamilton and Ron Perlman. On the panel were stars Kristin Kreuk (Smallville) and Jay Ryan (Terra Nova), along with executive producers Sherri Cooper and Jennifer Levin.

The series, which premiered on October 11, 2012, is now in its second season, and attendees at the panel were treated to an advanced screening of the Season 2, Episode 2 “”Kidnapped,” which airs tonight, October 14 at 9/8c.

See below for photos from the panel, as well as thoughts on the episode shown.

While I know the classic story of Beauty and the Beast and remember some of the original television series, I’ve never seen the CW series. Therefore, going into this advanced screening, I knew absolutely nothing about the show except that it stars Kreuk, who I know from Smallville. In the show, the actress stars as Detective Catherine Chandler with Jay Ryan as Vincent, the “Beast.” As a teenage, Vincent had saved Catherine; years later, once she’s a cop, a case leads her back to him and she learns he was a soldier. They eventually fall in love and have an unconventional relationship, which I gleamed involved lots of picnics on Catherine’s roof.

I was concerned that I wouldn’t understand anything going on in the episode, but surprisingly, it was quite easy to jump on, as it appears that Vincent had gone missing last season and now that he’s returned, he has no memories; also, the scars that were on his face are gone now. Catherine is trying to get him to remember their time together, so as she does that, any newcomers to the series will learn along with Vincent.

Also, I assumed, for some reason, that Beauty and the Beast was likely aimed at teens and would be eye-roll-inducing. To my delight, that wasn’t the case at all. Vincent was turned into a “Beast” by some kind of supersoldier program and can turn beast at will – so, smartly, he’s handsome most of the time, and then goes beast when it is in fight mode. It also seems like it’s just his face that changes, and not so much that he looks lion-like, like how we think of The Beast every Beauty and the Beast story. The panelists explained that in this season, Vincent’s “beast” face is done digitally, and it looked pretty good to me from what I saw. Also, they said that there will be more beast characters showing up in the series.

Here’s some [possible] SPOILER Thoughts on the episode, so beware.

– While Vincent’s memories have been wiped, he’s still feels a pull towards Catherine. In the episode, she tries to find him to protect him from her colleagues at the NYPD, and he eventually shows up at her roof, their usual meeting place.

– It’s clear that Catherine loves Vincent very much, and I was kind of heart-broken for her since she wants so badly for Vincent to remember something about her and their time together as lovers. When he asks about their their relationship, she tells him he was her boyfriend.

– It was even more upsetting when Vincent kidnaps Catherine because he’s not sure if her intentions are good. He takes her to his boat and ties her to a chair, but eventually she convinces him to untie her. While, again, I felt bad for Catherine, I thought it was funny that Vincent felt she was being a “stalker.”

– In another effort to get Vincent to remember her, Catherine kisses him a few times. When that doesn’t jog his memory, she reveals to him that they used to do more than kiss. This cuts right to the two of them naked in bed AFTER having had sex. Oh well, no on-screen action there.

– Right after the sex, Catherine feels hopeful, only to have Vincent tie her up again (in a non-kinky way), so that she doesn’t follow him on his next mission.

– Even though earlier in the episode, Catherine says Vincent would never hurt her, he actually does this time – he gets angry, goes beast, and sends her flying. She then says he’s never done anything like that before to her.

– Throughout the episode it appears that Vincent has been turned into a villain, but then there are some reveals. It’s still unclear to me if he’s supposed to be a villain now, or if he was supposed to be before, but there’s someone who’s controlling him and we don’t know their intentions yet.

– I liked Austin Basis as J.T. Forbes, who is Vincent’s childhood friend, who is close to Catherine now. He seems like he’s maybe the sometimes-annoying sidekick, but he’s also the hacker guy who uses his computer to get the answers to every single problem or issue.

– Didn’t really love Nina Lisandrello as Tess Vargas, who is Catherine’s partner. There wasn’t much on-screen interaction between the two, many phone calls. While they look like they match as police partners, I don’t know about their chemistry. One thing is for sure, Nina seems quite possessive of Catherine and now jealous of J.T. and Catherine’s budding alliance.

– Sendhil Ramamurthy from Heroes plays Gabriel Lowen, an assistant district attorney who seems to be thwarting Catherine’s efforts to protect Vincent. He might be a potential love interest for a love triangle.

– We see another Beast in this episode, who Vincent then has to fight. How many more Beasts will turn up is unknown, but the producers said there will be more in this season.

END SPOILERS

Detective Catherine Chandler (Kreuk) reunites with Vincent Keller (Ryan) after last season’s abduction – but not in the way she planned. He’s changed: his scar has disappeared, his memory has been wiped clean and he returns as a supercharged beast on a mysterious mission. Catherine needs to unravel the reasons behind Vincent’s change if she has any hope of recovering their epic love, while also trying to solve the secrets that swirl around her own life.

Beauty & the Beast: The First Season, which contains all 22 episodes, is available now on DVD and Instant Video if you want to catch up with the show. Also, you can watch the Season 2 premiere episode online at CW.

  3. Great review! A little hard on Tess due to not seeing the good friendship in Season 1. Fans understand. Austin as JT is gold; the ultra loyal friend who is sadly forgotten by Vincent, provides some comedic relief in the darker story lines always delivered with brilliant timing and skill!

  6. Please don’t bring in a woman for Vincent, bring in a guy to make Vincent jealous, that should bring his memories back.

  7. I’m so glad the season has started! Great so far—such an emotional roller coaster. Just like Season 1, you keep rooting for Vincent and Cat to be together. Please keep them together though…their chemistry and love story is what keeps me watching.
