For all the success of the Evil Dead (2013), and planning of merging the two Evil Dead franchises into one universe, the news of Fede Alvarez and Rodo Sayagues no longer directing Evil Dead 2 comes off as a bit strange. The two were attached to work on the sequel after the first film had a box office smash its opening weekend, and they seemed excited about it those first few weeks. But the following months after the films release, those talks subsided, with most of the attention being focused on Sam Raimi‘s Army Of Darkness 2.
Now in a new interview with Gorosito.TV, Sayagues says they have been off the project for months, and cannot confirm of the producers of the film have intentions with moving forward with a sequel.
Here’s the full quote:
“Look, I am sorry to tell you this but that movie won’t happen. Evil Dead 2 is not going to happen, at least not with us involved. We left that project many months ago because we preferred to put our energies on other things. I don’t know if the producers still have intentions of making it. But what I can tell you is that we are not part of that project.”
Sayagues is pretty much saying that Evil Dead 2 is dead. Although he says he doesn’t know “if the producers still have intentions of making it,” Sayagues saying that he and Alverez have left the project months ago suggest that the producers may have no interest in moving forward with making a sequel. Because key writers and directors leaving a project as big as Evil Dead 2 normally wouldn’t go under people’s radar, especially if they left the project as early as they did.

That’s awful news! I was really expecting any kind of fusion between ED2 and AoD2… And I really liked the Evil Dead remake… So sad, and it’s Halloween. How ironic.
