A Piggy’s Tale is an upcoming comic project about a three-legged rescue dog, Piggy, who inherits mysterious super powers from a pig! Piggy the dog is joined in his adventures by Simon, the mischievous cat. Together they travel throughout the Big Apple to protect the helpless, stop bullies, and bring hope to the hopeless.
Series creator and writer Tod Emko has based the story on his real-life companions, Piggy and Simon, which he rescued on two separate occasions through veterinarian efforts. The Kickstarter campaign is trying to raise funds to release two full-colored issues, as well as create digital goodies and a smartphone game.
I began reading the first issue of A Piggy’s Tale not entirely sure what to expect. There’s quite a bit of exposition in the opening pages telling Piggy’s back story. I thought this was a poor writing decision, that is, until I found myself tearing up.
This book explores emotionally-charged issues in a very innocent and touching way. A Piggy’s Tale isn’t all about rescued animals pulling at our heart-strings, though. There are smiles and genuine laughter to be had throughout the book. Ethan Young’s artwork shines in the more mischievous aspects of the book. His work captures emotion in these animals well.
The book is marketed for all-ages. It is, perhaps, important to note that there is some “bully language” (i.e. “jerks,” “freaks”) that might be a little to easy for the little ones to parrot. But for most kids this book should be okay.
The project has a variety of levels to help support it. So, fans of fun, emotional and adventurous comics really should go check out the Kickstarter campaign and consider giving it their support.
