Stephen Colbert went on Late Show With David Letterman earlier this month where he talked excitedly about his cameo in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug. The Colbert Report host, who’s a noted fan of the works of Hobbit author J.R.R. Tolkien, mentioned that his spot in the film was during a scene in Lake Town and that his wife and sons also appear.
I’ve seen the film a few times since its release two weeks ago and I didn’t spot Colbert in it, but now his cameo has finally been revealed. Check it out here below.

Here’s Colbert’s appearance on Letterman:
It was announced back in 2012 that Colbert would arrive to Middle-earth at some point in Jackson’s Hobbit film trilogy. Talking recently to Letterman about his role in Smaug, Colbert humorously referred to himself as the “breakout star” of the film, but while his appearance was small, there’s no one more deserving to make it into this movie then him. If you watch his Comedy Central show, The Colbert Report, then you know how much he loves the Tolkien universe and how well-versed in it he is. He did a segment on straightening out Congress after they used a Lord Of The Rings reference, and he wins every Tolkien trivia challenge he’s in, including against other Tolkien fans like actors James Franco and Ian McKellen (the latter of whom stars as the wizard Gandalf in both of Jackson’s Tolkien film trilogies), and according to New Zealand Herald, he even beat Hobbit producer and Tolkien expert Philippa Boyens.
Jackson said of Colbert: “I have never met a bigger Tolkien geek in my life. Philippa Boyens is our resident Tolkien expert, and when Stephen came down to visit the set, we put him head to head with Philippa on a Tolkien quiz – and Stephen triumphed.”
