Graham McTavish on Preacher

At New York Comic-Con Saturday afternoon, I had the pleasure of shooting the breeze with veteran actor Graham McTavish. The Scottish actor has over 100 IMDb credits including film, TV, and voiceover work in both animation and video games. He was in Peter Jackson’s Hobbit film trilogy (as the dwarf Dwalin), and had been a regular on both Prison Break and 24. Currently, he can be seen on the hit Starz series Outlander where he plays Dougal MacKenzie, as well as on AMC’s Preacher as The Cowboy/The Killer Of Saints. Between my wife’s obsession with Outlander and my love of Preacher, Graham McTavish is a popular man in our home.

I asked him if we would be getting deeper into The Cowboy’s back story in Season 2, and he said yes. After all the entire town of Annville, TX was literally decimated by an explosion. “You think Game of Thrones is bad? They kill one person, everyone goes nuts, but we killed the entire city!”

McTavish added that the entire first season ends up feeling like a prequel as only Jesse (Dominic Cooper), Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun), and Tulip (Ruth Negga) survive, but his character will lurk in their future.

He joked about how bloody his scene in the tavern in Hell was where he goes on his rampage. “That’s the most people I ever got to kill in one shot,” he said. The scene was an epic conclusion to a season-long story which showed his silent Cowboy heading slowly to a town to get medicine for his dying daughter. After getting into it with patrons, he returns to find his wife and daughter a feast for the crows. He loads up and heads back to the saloon to wipe everyone out. As a husband and as a father to a little girl, I told him I understood the Cowboy’s motivations, and he agreed wholeheartedly. The season ended with angels showing up in Hell with a deal to rescue him from eternity if he kills Jesse.

It was a fun little chat Graham McTavish. I know I can’t wait for Season 2 of Preacher to see how The Cowboy intermingles with the main characters. Preacher returns to AMC in 2017.

If you plan on attending NYCC on Sunday, October 09, 2016, visit Graham McTavish from 11:00 AM – 12:45 PM at Autographing Table 14 (cash-only $40 Autograph Fee; $50 Solo Photo Op Fee at Epic Photo Ops).

Keep it here at Geeks Of Doom all weekend for our on-site coverage of NYCC 2016 and follow us on Facebook and Twitter for updates.
