If you were a fan of Saturday Night Live in the ’90s, you are no doubt familiar with Matt Foley, the motivational speaker character played by the late Chris Farley. Considered to be one of the all-time greatest SNL characters/sketches, it made its debut in 1993 and would make many appearances over the years after that.
But SNL is not where the character was born. No no, Farley was screaming about living in a van down by the river long before the character was first used on the big stage. Farley used to be a member of Chicago’s Second City sketch/improv comedy group, where he also played Matt Foley.
Below you can watch a video of Farley doing the Matt Foley character for Second City in 1990—three years before it was first used on SNL. The sketch is very similar to that first and best known version we saw on SNL, which also featured David Spade and Christina Applegate.
Also featured in this version is Tim Meadows, Bob Odenkirk, Tim O’Malley, David Pasquesi, Jill Talley, and Holly Wortell.
