I’ve never checked out many webcomics, but when I read the synopsis for The Outrunners, I knew I had to give it a shot. Written by Jonathan Gelatt and illustrated by Andrew Krahnke, the ongoing comic – with a new page added every Wednesday – offers a healthy dose of adolescent gangbangers who don ripped jeans and mohawks, carry guns and bats, and raise their fists to the man! Really, what more could you ask for?
Years after global energy wars ravaged the earth, the world has become energy deficient and now “united” under the crest of the American Continents. With the government regulating all aspects of social life including travel and gun use – only the nationalized police known as Metros are permitted to handle firearms – the streets have become littered with disorganized gang activity run by young criminals.
After a massive haul that has the potential to make the Outrunners a major player in the crime world, the group of juvenile, felonious misfits quickly becomes the target of rival gangs and the Metros.
Gelatt has written an exhilarating, fast-paced dystopian action comic reminiscent of classic films like The Warriors, Mad Max, and a dash of The Outsiders. He does a superb job with pacing and characterization. The action scenes are aggressive and lively while the character moments are both dramatic and witty.
Krahnke’s black and white illustrations are bold and ripe with grit, yet have a unique cartoon style that adds to the creative dynamic of the comic as a whole. His images of post-apocalyptic ruined cities with a hint of futurism add a certain level of complexity that amalgamates beautifully with the slang dialect of the teenage delinquents.
The Outrunners is definitely not suitable for younger readers, with profanity tossed about effortlessly – as one would imagine would be the case in a world such as this — though I will surely be continuing on with this awesomely raucous tale. The Outrunners is a rollicking good time!
