Dredd star Karl Urban took a moment while at Emerald City Comic Con to urge fans to sign a petition and like the “Make a Dredd Sequel” Facebook page. Urban has not been ashamed to admit his love for the severely overlooked 2012 film in which he starred as the titular character. The film received mostly positive reviews from critics.
You can read more about the push for a sequel, find out where you can help, and watch the video of Urban urging fans below.
Director Alex Garland has said he imagined a trilogy of Dredd films and that if the first film hit a certain dollar amount a sequel would be definite. As hardcore movie fans know things are not always so sure in the Hollywood scene. Dredd didn’t hit as hard as some would have liked but it did do well overseas and has found an audience in DVD and Blu-ray.
Even more important, Judge Dredd comic creator, John Wagner, joined in on the positivity. He had this to say:
“I liked the movie. It was, unlike the first film, a true representation of Judge Dredd … Karl Urban was a fine Dredd and I’d be more than happy to see him in the follow-up. Olivia Thirlby excelled as Anderson … The character and storyline are pure Dredd.” -John Wagner
In September 2013 comics publisher 2000 AD released a comic continuation of the film titled Dredd: Underbelly. The comic sold out and, as reported on Geeks of Doom earlier this year, went into a second printing.
