Kickstarter Spotlight: Outcasts of Jupiter

Every Kickstarter is a work of passion but few have the honor of being a family project like Outcasts Of Jupiter #1. Comprised of three siblings from Nigeria, this team has talent in spades. But considering the fact that their parents were both artists, I suppose it’s not shocking at all. And from what I’ve seen so far, the end result will be spectacular. Don’t believe me? Then read on, unbeliever!

To kick it all off, let’s meet the three remarkable people behind this campaign, together known as the Coker CoOp. Shobo seems to be the point man for the project. At least he’s the one I speak to when I have a question. He’s also the writer and person in charge of media and marketing (which makes sense since he’s a marketing consultant at his day job). Shofela is the other brother and the genius behind the art for this comic. He’s a professional artist with credited work with Tony Hawk, Sony Online Entertainment, and EverQuest. Their sister, Funlola, isn’t necessarily working on the comic but she’s a professional metalsmith and is helping her brothers on the fundraiser by creating some of the unique rewards available for donors.

Shobo emailed me one of the most inspirational quotes I have ever received from anyone. It speaks a lot to what they are trying to do and why they are so focused on it. Here’s what he had to say:

“Now that we’re grown up and live in different parts of the world, we want to tell stories with a strong moral fiber and thematic resonance, stories full of wonder, with diverse characters and cultures. Nigeria and Africa in general get a bad wrap, you rarely hear anything good about the country and continent in the news, and from a really young age we’ve been on a personal mission to do something, no matter how small to help change that perception, and to give young African kids heroes and stories that they can be proud of. Outcasts is us coming together take a stab at that.”

As for the comic itself, there is so much awesomeness that it’s hard to cover it all. Based around a futuristic Earth a thousand years from now, natural disasters have devastated the surface and most of humanity has moved on to the new hub of the solar system, Jupiter. And that’s where our four outcasts come in. Stein, Sulesh, and Denarii are trying to track down and retrieve Persio as the comic begins, though we’ll find out why as we go forward with the series. Known for taking on unique and unusual jobs that pique their interest, this team of vagabonds don’t have the best reputation surrounding them. I won’t go into too many details here since the Kickstarter page has far more information you can check out at your convenience, but there is a really cool augemented reality page they are developing for this first issue.

As I am sure you know, with these crowdfunding campaigns have some awesome rewards available to you for your donations. If you like your comics in digital form, six dollars will get you a copy. Ten bucks gets you a physical book, but fifteen gets you both plus wallpapers for your smartphone and computer! I’m partial to the fifty dollar one, though. You get both versions of the comic (print and .pdf), all the wallpapers, four buttons, three postcards, three stickers, three posters, a t-shirt, an art print, and your name listed as a backer…that’s a lot of stuff for a mere fifty bones! But there are a lot more reward levels you should look into, I barely touched on any of them here.

Take the time to check out the official Kickstarter page, you won’t regret it. It has more information about the comic, the campaign, and the team. There’s more to this than just a comic, as I’m sure you understood from the quote above. But don’t take my word for it, folks. I’ve dropped the video in below and urge you to watch it before you jump over to the Kickstarter site. Let me know what your thoughts are after you peruse the campaign page. But don’t wait too long as this closes down on May 18, 2014.
