An official release date has been locked in for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, the first installment in a planned trilogy of Harry Potter spinoff movies.
Warner Brothers has set a November 18, 2016 release date for the movie, which will be based on the book of the same name by Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling. Rowling will take on the task of adapting her book into a screenplay herself.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is presented as one of Harry’s textbooks mentioned in the first book in the series, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. The textbook is authored in the story by magizoologist Newt Scamander, who will be the focus of the movie. The textbook teaches of the many magical creatures that exist in that world.
While the movie is a spinoff of the Harry Potter franchise, it’s not a prequel or sequel officially. The story is set in the same world, but around 70 years prior to the start of Harry Potter’s story. Whether any familiar faces or names will make any appearances is unknown. Albus Dumbledore does provide the foreword for the textbook.
Apart from Rowling working on the screenplay, no director, actors, or producers are attached to the project yet.
