Let’s say your father died a violent death and his killers had scattered his body parts all over the world, and you were on a quest to gather his remains together in order to give him a proper funeral. Now, let’s say you don’t remember much of what happened up until your father’s death, but everyone is saying he was an evil magical emperor who was utterly defeated in a world war, and a corps of warriors is chasing you, bent on preventing his remains from being gathered together again. One more complication: Let’s just say you’re not the only offspring of the late emperor with the same aim in mind. It seems that everyone in the world is against you, except for two saboteurs and a dragon that hides in the guises of a little girl and a cat. That’s the set up for Chaika: The Coffin Princess, now currently streaming on Crunchyroll.

It’s five years since the Gaz Empire, under the Emperor Gaz, was overthrown by an alliance of six nations. Eight warriors, known as the eight heroes, ended the war by killing the emperor, taking his separate remains to their respective countries. A young, unemployed saboteur named Toru Acura is aimlessly wandering through this peacetime world, uncertain of what role he should play. One day he rescues a white-haired wizard named Chaika Trabant from a deadly man-eating unicorn. Chaika, who carries a large coffin with her everywhere she goes, enlists Toru and his sister Akari, who is also a saboteur, to steal her father’s remains from the eight heroes. Inside the coffin Chaika carries a large Gundo Sniper Rifle, which allows her to cast high precision spells. She reveals to them that she is actually Chaika Gaz, the late emperor’s daughter. She wants to gather her father’s remains in order to give him a proper funeral. But forces have gathered to capture Chaika and prevent her from carrying out her task. The Post-War Kleeman Agency’s Gillette Corps, led by Alveric Gillette, a cavalier, pursue Chaika, Toru, and Akari relentlessly. In the course of events, Chaika and the saboteurs encounter Fredrika, a dragoon, or dragon, with the ability to shape shift. After losing to Chaika and the saboteurs, she joins their company. As the group journeys through the continent seeking the late emperor’s remains, they discover that there’s more than one person claiming to be Chaika and wanting to restore the empire. So which one is the real Chaika? We’re just going to have to tune into the rest of the series to find out.

Featuring tight character designs by Nobuhiro Arai, whose resume boasts the likes of Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day and Blast of Tempest, and featuring great voice acting by a cast led by Junji Majima and Chika Anzai, Chaika: The Coffin Princess is streaming every Wednesday at 1:00 pm on Crunchyroll. I highly recommend this highly imaginative and interesting fantasy anime.

  1. I think Chaika is the action/fantasy gem of this season even though shows like No Game No Life and The Irregular at Magic High school tend to get more the spotlight. It’s awesome that it already has a second season on the way too and we will only have to wait until October.
