Video Games: The Movie

A new documentary is on the way titled Video Games: The Movie, and, as you might have guessed, it is all about video games—from the early days of gaming and following the unbelievable evolution to where they are today, a true art form and multi-billion dollar industry.

The documentary is directed by Jeremy Snead, and executive produced by Zach Braff (Garden State, Wish I Was Here) and Cliff Bleszinski (Gears of War trilogy, Unreal Tournament). It is narrated by The Goonies and Lord of the Rings star Sean Astin.

Now Video Games: The Movie has found itself a distributor, with Variance Films acquiring the rights, and a trailer has also been released, which you can check out below.

Of the acquisition, Variance’s Dylan Marchetti said:

“Everyone loves a great video game, but in recent years they’ve evolved into something way beyond what any of us who grew up playing an 8-bit system could imagine. But regardless of whether you’re up gaming until 3 a.m. or haven’t played a video game in decades, there’s something for you in this film, and we think audiences will be delighted.”

Director Snead added:

“Games are a part of the human experience and permeate our culture now more than ever before. I’m thrilled that my film will expose the world to a never-before-told story of the men and women who built this industry, as well as what it has become and what it will continue to evolve into, and I’m thrilled to be partnering with Variance to bring it out to the world.”

The documentary features thoughts and insight from Bleszinski, Braff, Hideo Kojima, Hiroyoki Kobayashi, Warren Spector, Chris Hardwick, Alison Haislip, Doug Tennapel, Clare Grant, Wil Wheaton, Nolan Bushnell, and Palmer Luckey.

Video Games: The Movie will get a digital release on iTunes and others on July 15th, with a limited theatrical release in the U.S. and Canada on July 18th.
