Recently I joked that Universal could simply remake cult classic The Monster Squad as the solution to bringing their Classic Monsters together for the planned Avengers-style reboot.

But a remake of the movie has actually been in the works for the past few years or so, with a pair of writers hired and Rob Cohen, who previously made the rebooted Mummy sequel The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, set to direct.

Now, thankfully, comes word that the Monster Squad remake is officially dead in the water.

During a press junket recently for the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles remake, producers Brad Fuller and Andrew Form of Platinum Dunes were asked about other projects including the Monster Squad remake, the next Friday the 13th, and a third entry in the Purge series.

When asked about the remake, the pair answered simply and directly:

Usually in Hollywood, projects being developed can only ever be mostly dead. Rarely are they fully dead, like comic book superheros or slasher movie killers, such as Jason Voorhees, fittingly. But for now, this is happy news for those who feared seeing their beloved Monster Squad remade.
