Yet another video game based on The Walking Dead is on the way, this time with a focus on co-op gameplay.
The game will be made by Overkill Software, who’s best known for their co-op first-person shooter heist games Payday: The Heist and Payday 2, through a partnership between their parent company Starbreeze Studios and Skybound Interactive, the comics publishing imprint founded by Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman.

Kirkman himself has also signed on to help with the game, which will explore new characters and storylines.
Of the announcement, Starbreeze CEO Bo Andersson Klint said:
“The collaboration between Starbreeze Studios and our partner Skybound Interactive will deliver something uniquely exciting for our millions of fans. We’re two independents joining forces to create the ultimate survival horror game. With Robert on the team, we will bring The Walking Dead into the world of first-person shooter co-op games. It will be gameplay focused, ferocious and bring chaos to the traditional industry model – from us developers straight to you. This time it’s big – don’t walk alone.”
With Kirkman adding:
“From day one on this project it’s been clear to me that this is the Walking Dead co-op action game fans have been waiting for. I can’t wait for people to learn just what OVERKILL has been cooking up for this game. Skybound is always about breaking new ground and trying to find something unexpected in all endeavors and this game continues that tradition in grand style.”
While The Walking Dead is best known as the comic book that became one of the most popular TV series of all time, it’s proven quite popular to turn the property into a video game, sometimes successfully and sometimes not so much. Telltale Games’ episodic take on The Walking Dead has had a huge impact on the gaming world in its two seasons, while first-person shooter The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct didn’t fare nearly as well. Offering co-op in this latest game should be popular with fans who have been itching to try to survive the zombie apocalypse with their friends.
Unfortunately the game won’t be arriving until sometime in 2016, so a lengthy wait is ahead.
