Many casual metal fans only know the band as the one from which guitarist Kirk Hammett was recruited to join Metallica after the dismissal of Dave Mustaine. However, formed in 1980, Exodus was a pivotal band in the development of the Bay Area thrash scene and the evolution of the genre itself. Gary Holt, who started out as Hammett’s guitar tech, would join the band as a second guitar player before Exodus recorded their debut album, Bonded By Blood. Holt would be the only consistent member of Exodus, appearing on every recording up to this date. He is also currently pulling double duty filling the slot left open in Slayer by Jeff Hanneman’s death.
This October, Exodus will release their tenth studio album, Blood In, Blood Out via Nuclear Blast, and will embark on a tour this Fall with Slayer and Suicidal Tendencies. On the album, the song “Salt in the Wound” will feature a solo from Hammett, who jammed on stage with his former bandmates this year at two of his Fear FestEvil events.
