Looking to capitalize on the success of the 1996 horror hit Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer was released in 1997. The movie starred Jennifer Love Hewitt, Freddie Prinze Jr., Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Ryan Phillippe as a group of friends who accidentally hit a man while out for a joyride and try to dispose of the body without telling anyone, only to have someone who claims to know their secret contact them a year later.
Now comes word that a reboot of the movie is in the works at Sony Pictures, and that they’ve hired Oculus writer and director Mike Flanagan and Oculus co-writer Jeff Howard to pen the screenplay.
The reboot, same as the original, will be adapted from the 1973 book of the same name from author Lois Duncan. The ’97 I Know What You Did Last Summer was the second writing credit of Dawson’s Creek and The Following creator Kevin Williamson. His first was Scream.
This isn’t just an “in development” sort of project either—Sony is reportedly high on getting it made, and hopes to have it released in 2016.
Flanagan also wrote and directed 2011’s Absentia (one worth checking out this Halloween season if you’ve not yet seen it), as well as Somnia in 2015, which was also co-written with Howard. Whether Flanagan will step into the director’s chair here or if someone else will be brought in is not yet known.
The I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot will be produced by Neal Moritz, who also produced the original.
