God Hates Astronauts #4 is the “calm before the storm.” Now, I don’t really mean storm, I mean the COMPLETE AND TOTAL INVASION OF THE PLANET EARTH!!! Yeah, it’s that serious!!! So, this issue is a lot of set-up, and set-up issues can be boring. Was this one? Let’s find out”¦
Writer Ryan Browne REALLY hits a home run with God Hates Astronauts #4. After three great issues in a row, you’d expect him to have an off one, and like I mentioned earlier, this one is all set-up for next issue. What I didn’t mention is that unlike other comics, Browne makes this issue both really important AND a really fun, an entertaining installment on its own. Yes, it sets up a bunch of things that are going to be played out starting next issue, but if I gave this book to someone who’s never read the series before, they’d be able to understand what’s going on and enjoy it for the story that’s inside. That’s something that’s both hard to do and not commonly done in comics today.
Over on the art side of things, Ryan Browne (where have I heard that name before?) gives us his usual rich, lush, and fantastic art. Even though the pages are filled with crazy monsters and creatures and some of the best visual gags I’ve ever seen, but the bottom of it all, Browne really knows how to tell a story visually. I highly recommend that you read this book twice. Once, read it like you would another comic, but on the second time, don’t read the words, just look at the art. You’ll have a totally different appreciation for it.
OK, this one makes it four GREAT issues in a row from Ryan Browne and company, and this pretty much answers the “does GHA deserve to be on my pull list?” question. The answer, is a great big huge YES, IT DOES!!! So, make sure and add it your subscriptions the next time you’re in your comic shop or the next time that you go online. After four issues of awesomeness, it’s not a lucky coincidence, it’s a FACT that Ryan Browne makes one heck of a great comic book!
