The Norwegian word “umenneske” translates to brute, animal, beast, monster devil, or demon, all of which are fairly accurate analogies for the style of black metal offered up by Bergen-based band Taake. The band’s name itself is the Norwegian word for fog.
Formed in 1993 by leader and vocalist Hoest, Taake has been purveying their over-the-top brand of black metal in the most nihilistic fashion possible for over two decades. The band is an electric live act and have a penchant for doing anything they can to piss off whatever establishment they find themselves surrounded by. In 2007, they were thrown out of Germany after Hoest appeared onstage in Essen with a swastika painted on his chest, an act that is strictly forbidden by German law. The singer explained that the act was meant not as any sort of political or racially motivated act, but as a statement against censorship.
Taake has issued 6 studio albums to date and numerous demos and EPs. From their fourth studio album, 2008’s eponymous Taake, here they are with the official video for the song “Umenneske.”
