BAADASSSSS!   |

Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels in Dumb and Dumber To

The last week before Christmas is bound to be a slow one on the home video new release front. The big titles of the year are mostly available to buy for the holidays. Now, we’re just counting down the days until a new year begins and the clock is reset. But never fear, regular readers of this column (yes, both of you), for I have scrounged together a few stories of interest for this next-to-last edition of The Digital Wire for 2014.

Below you’ll find info on several future home video releases complete with technical specs, release dates, and links to pre-order at Amazon, as well as a few titles releasing this week. We would greatly appreciate it if you use those links to order because a small percentage of each order helps keep this website running at max power. The cover art for certain titles has yet to be finalized.

Don't Go in the Woods

The 1981 indie horror oddity Don’t Go in the Woods (alternately known as Don’t Go in the Woods….Alone!) may not have been one of the best slasher movies ever made, but it was certainly one of the weirdest, complete with an insanely catchy theme song based in part on “Teddy Bears’ Picnic”. This cult hit of the drive-in circuit and video stores – as well as one of the infamous “Video Nasties” to be banned in the United Kingdom in the 80’s – about a lunatic slicing and dicing his way through a large number of campers and backpackers who dare enter his wilderness domain was released on DVD over a decade ago. Now thanks to Vinegar Syndrome it will be receiving its first ever Blu-ray release on March 10, 2015. The film has been restored in 2K resolution from the 35mm interpositive and will come with a slew of bonus features held over from the previous DVD release including a commentary with director James Bryan, a group commentary with numerous guests, another commentary with the podcasters The Hysteria Continues!, cast and crew interviews, and a whole lot more. A DVD copy will also be included.

Inherent Vice

In an interesting development, Inherent Vice, Paul Thomas Anderson‘s star-studded adaptation of the best-selling Thomas Pynchon novel, won’t go into wide release here in the States for a few more weeks but has already been made available for pre-order on Blu-ray and DVD from Warner Home Video. Extra features and a release date have yet to be announced. This film has been racking up some impressive reviews since it premiered on the festival circuit a few months ago. An April/May release wouldn’t be unthinkable depending upon how Inherent does at awards time.

Dumb & Dumber To

Twenty years after the original Dumb & Dumber made stars out of Jim Carrey and directors Peter and Bobby Farrelly the belated follow-up Dumb & Dumber To was released to good box office and puerile reviews. Universal Studios Home Entertainment will release the long-awaited comedy sequel on Blu-ray and DVD on February 17, 2015. Both editions will get a decent selection of bonus features, but predictably the Blu-ray will get a little more:

Alternate Opening (Blu-ray exclusive)
Deleted and Extended Scenes (Blu-ray exclusive)
Gag Reel (Blu-ray exclusive)
What’s so Smart about Dumb and Dumber To? From stress relief to providing a new perspective on life, the film’s cast and crew and the author of Psychology for Dummies make the case for why you sometimes need to step back from the seriousness of life and just get dumb.(Blu-ray exclusive)

Chapter 3 – “We’re Gunna Need Some Wheels” – The Cars”” Take a ride on the Zamboni, go inside the hearse, and discover the story behind the triumphant return of the Mutt Cutts van in this fun piece!
Chapter 4 – “That’s Commitment!” – The Stunts”” This chapter offers a high-paced peek into just a few of the hilarious stunts involved in the making of this movie.
