Body Count, the 1990s metal band formed by rapper Ice-T, has released a video for their cover of Suicidal Tendencies‘ classic tale of woe, “Institutionalized.” The cover tune comes from the band’s 2014 comeback album Manslaughter, released via Sumerian Records, and contains heavily revised lyrics.

Watch the video here below (along with the original Suicidal version).

Ice started his career making rap albums in the 1980s before forming metal band Body Count and also making the jump to acting. Aside from his feature film roles in movies, the performer has made a name for himself in television, especially with his longtime role as NYPD Detective Odafin Tutuola on NBC’s Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.

Even though he has been juggling music and acting for decades now, along with voice acting, audiobook recording, podcasting, and reality TV, Ice still comes up against the haters who question how he can both act and make music. See the response he posted to Twitter yesterday:

As for the song “Institutionalized,” it appeared on crossover thrash band Suicidal Tendencies’ 1983 self-titled debut album, Suicidal Tendencies. It’s performed by lead singer Mike Muir the first-person perspective of a teenager who is struggling with everything he does whose parents have him institutionalized after they misinterpret his pensiveness and frustration with authority figures who continue to misunderstand him for a drug problem and mental instability. The song, which put the Los Angeles band on the map, contains the now-famous “All I wanted was a Pepsi!” sequence in it and has lyrics that are still relevant and thought-provoking today (unlike Ice’s take, which includes modern-day references like Xbox, Oprah, and invalid passwords, and does in fact sound like someone who has an anger management problem).

“Institutionalized” was featured last November in Geeks Of Doom’s Thrashback Thursday column.
