Ryan Gosling Drive 01

We learned last month that Harry Potter star Emma Watson was cast as Belle in Disney’s live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast. But who will play Beast to Watson’s Belle?

If Disney has their way, it will be Ryan Gosling.

The Drive actor was reportedly offered the role of the Beast, according to Tracking Board, which added that Gosling was the studio’s top choice for the part.

No official word yet regarding the casting from the studio or Gosling, who got his start as a child actor on the Disney Channel’s Mickey Mouse Club throughout the 1990s and starred in Disney’s 2000 film Remember the Titans. The actor made his directorial debut with 2014’s Lost River, which he also wrote and produced. If the Gosling takes on the Beast role, it will likely see him singing and dancing, as the live-action remake will reportedly use the animated classic’s songs, including “Be Our Guest” and “Something There.” (Watson had posted online about prepping to perform those specific songs.)

Disney’s live-action Beauty and the Beast will be directed by Bill Condon, who previously penned the scripts for the big-screen adaptations of the musicals Chicago and Dreamgirls, the latter in which he also served as director. His other directorial credits include the two-part The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dead films, The Fifth Estate, and Gods and Monsters, with his next film being this year’s Mr. Holmes starring Ian McKellen as a 93-year-old Sherlock Holmes.

No release date has been set at this time for Beauty and the Beast, which will have a script by Evan Spiliotopoulos, who’s penned several Disney direct-to-home video releases (Cinderella III: A Twist in Time, The Little Mermaid: Ariel’s Beginning), as well as 2014’s Hercules starring Dwayne Johnson. The screenwriter is also working on scripts for The Huntsman, the 2016 follow-up to Snow White and the Huntsman, and Wanted 2, the 2016 sequel to the Angelina Jolie actioner Wanted.

Disney’s 1991 animated version, which grossed $424 million, was the first animated film to earn an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture.
