Along with Melissa McCarthy reviving Chris Farley’s Matt Foley character on tonight’s Saturday Night Live 40th Anniversary Special, there were some other tributes to late SNL cast members, including one for Gilda Radner.
During Radner’s tenure in the 1970s as one of the Not Ready For Prime Time Players, one of her most popular characters was Roseanne Roseannadanna, who made regular appearances on the show’s Weekend Update news segment. For the SNL 40 special, actress and two-time SNL host Emma Stone (Birdman, The Amazing Spider-Man) did a tribute to Radner and the character on a Weekend Update segment hosted by Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, and Jane Curtin (all past Weekend Update hosts).
Watch Emma Stone as Roseanne Roseannadanna here below in the full Weekend Update segment; also embedded below is the original skit from Radner.
Stone’s portion was a quick one, where she nailed the standout look and tone of the character with her huge hair with red clips and brashness in a performance that was obviously from the heart. It was a treat to revisit the character reading a letter from Mr. Richard Feder from Fort Lee, New Jersey (as usual), who was having trouble with the side effects of trying to quit smoking (one of Radner’s old bits).
Be sure to read Geeks Of Doom’s tribute to the late great Gilda Radner, who was an original SNL cast member who starred on the show from 1975-1980
Along with McCarthy and Stone’s tributes, this Weekend Update segment embedded below also included the return of the Land Shark, performance by current SNL member Bobby Moynihan.
