SNL 40 Emma Stone Gilda Radner Roseanne Roseannadanna Saturday Night Live

Along with Melissa McCarthy reviving Chris Farley’s Matt Foley character on tonight’s Saturday Night Live 40th Anniversary Special, there were some other tributes to late SNL cast members, including one for Gilda Radner.

During Radner’s tenure in the 1970s as one of the Not Ready For Prime Time Players, one of her most popular characters was Roseanne Roseannadanna, who made regular appearances on the show’s Weekend Update news segment. For the SNL 40 special, actress and two-time SNL host Emma Stone (Birdman, The Amazing Spider-Man) did a tribute to Radner and the character on a Weekend Update segment hosted by Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, and Jane Curtin (all past Weekend Update hosts).

Watch Emma Stone as Roseanne Roseannadanna here below in the full Weekend Update segment; also embedded below is the original skit from Radner.

SNL 40 Melissa McCarthy Revives Chris Farley's Matt Foley Saturday Night Live

Tonight’s Saturday Night Live 40th Anniversary Special has seen a lot of reuniting of past and present cast members, musical guests, hosts, and more, as well as tributes to alumni who have passed on.

In one said tribute of the night, actress and three-time SNL host Melissa McCarthy revived the Matt Foley character, made popular by the late Chris Farley. McCarthy made an appearance during a Weekend Update segment hosted by Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, and Jane Curtin (all past Weekend Update hosts), coming out dressed in the motivational speaker’s classic duds — thick black glasses, plaid jacket, green necktie, and pants that constantly need adjusting.

Watch the video here below from the SNL 40 special of the entire Weekend Update segment, which includes the McCarthy as Matt Foley bit, as well as Emma Stone doing the late Gilda Radner’s Roseanne Roseannadanna character. Also embedded below is the original Chris Farley skit which featured Chris Spade and guest Christina Applegate.

Glida Radner

Today marks the 24th anniversary of the passing of famed SNL alumnus Gilda Radner, who was the show’s first break out female superstar; who dazzled American audiences coast to coast with a wide array of memorable characters; who was part of the very first wave of the show and instrumental to its success; and who set a tone and standard for the many successful female SNL players who followed in the wake of her. Radner died at the age of 42, on May 20, 1989, of ovarian cancer.

All but forgotten by today’s staunch SNL audience, who witnesses a show which is now in its 39th year on the air and is a much, much different one than the one that premiered in October 1975, Radner nonetheless still remains one of the greatest personalities to come from the program.
