In GI Joe: Snake Eyes Agent of Cobra #2, the “Holy crap what the heck am I looking at?!?!?!” factor continues, in a big way. This book is the unexpected gem of IDW’s current output of GI Joe books, and that’s saying something, because the other ones are not too shabby at all!
Writer Mike Costa is no stranger to GI Joe, and specifically to Cobra. I’m not sure if IDW pitched this book to him or he pitched it to IDW, but whoever is responsible for this, well, I owe them a drink. Not only is this a fantastic concept, but Costa pulls off the execution of this almost flawlessly. It’s hard to write (and read) a comic where the main character doesn’t talk. You have to have all the other characters explain the main character’s action and motives and thoughts, and after a while, it gets to be messy and tiring for the audience to read. But, that’s not the case here, as Costa writes the issue in a way that it’s logical and natural for the other characters to be doing the talking while Snake Eyes observes.
Artist Paolo Villanelli really impresses in this second issue. He really needs to be on more titles or on another monthly Joe title after this mini-series ends. His style is a perfect mix of both realism and simplicity. He was born to draw a book like this. The “main character not talking” problems fall on him, too. Maybe even more so than on Costa. Villanelli is the one who has to convey all the emotion, expressions, and “messages” from Snake Eyes, who’s not only mute, but his face is covered. If you can pull off a comic script with THOSE kinds of obstacles, that’s some real talent you’ve got. And Villanelli has it!
You really should be reading this title. Not only is it great, it’s a really refreshing change of pace “swerve” on the Joe mythos. Now, I’m hoping like everyone else that Snake Eyes isn’t gonna stay with Cobra forever, but it sure looks possible! I honestly don’t know. And knowing is half the……yeah, you saw that one coming a mile away.
