SYNOPSIS:
MR. HOLMES is a new twist on the world’s most famous detective. 1947, an aging Sherlock Holmes returns from a journey to Japan, where, in search of a rare plant with powerful restorative qualities, he has witnessed the devastation of nuclear warfare. Now, in his remote seaside farmhouse, Holmes faces the end of his days tending to his bees, with only the company of his housekeeper and her young son, Roger. Grappling with the diminishing powers of his mind, Holmes comes to rely upon the boy as he revisits the circumstances of the unsolved case that forced him into retirement, and searches for answers to the mysteries of life and love – before it’s too late.
Mr. Holmes also stars Milo Parker (Ghosthunters: On Icy Trails, Robot Overlords) as the young boy, Roger, three time Academy Award nominee Laura Linney (The Truman Show, Love Actually), Hattie Morahan (The Golden Compass, The Bank Job), Patrick Kennedy (War Horse, Boardwalk Empire), Hiroyuki Sanada (The Last Samurai, The Wolverine), Roger Allam (Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, V for Vendetta), and Colin Starkey (Inspector Lewis) as Dr. John Watson.
The movie is directed by Gods and Monsters, Kinsey, and Dreamgirls writer and director Bill Condon. He won an Academy Award for Monsters, which also starred McKellen in an Oscar nominated performance, and also directed The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn and The Fifth Estate, and wrote Chicago, for which he was also nominated for an Oscar. Condon next directs the live action adaptation of Beauty and the Beast for Disney starring Emma Watson and Luke Evans.
The movie will be released this summer.
