Lucy Lawless joins Ash vs Evil Dead at Starz

Deadites of the world, I have some groovy news for you — Lucy Lawless has officially been added to the cast of upcoming Starz series Ash vs Evil Dead!

That’s right, folks, Xena the Warrior Princess herself is reuniting with her former co-star Bruce Campbell to fight the demons of the Necronomicon. Lawless will play Ruby, a hunter who blames Campbell’s titled Ash for the surge of evil going on.

Here’s Starz’s official description of Ruby:

Ruby is a mysterious figure who is myopic in her quest to hunt down the source of the recent Evil outbreaks. The only problem: she believes that Ash (Bruce Campbell) is the cause of it all.

Lawless became a household name in the mid-90s when she appeared as Xena on Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and was quickly spun off into her own show, Xena: Warrior Princess. Xena was co-created by Robert Tapert, who 15 years earlier had helped create the cult horror flick Evil Dead with Sam Raimi. Bruce Campbell co-starred as Autolycus in 9-episodes of Xena and of course is the star of the Evil Dead film franchise.

Campbell has been fighting the forces of evil for 35 years now. He traded in his S-Mart threads for a chainsaw and a boomstick. The 1987 sequel, Evil Dead 2, is considered a classic horror-comedy and 1992’s Army of Darkness is an all-out hilarious spoof. Now he’s back for the Starz television series and has Xena herself to help (or perhaps hinder?) his quest to rid the world of evil.

The new series, which will film on location in New Zealand this Spring and will debut on the Starz cable network later this year, will also star Ray Santiago, Dana DeLorenzo, and Jill Marie Jones. It is set for 10 half-hour episodes.

More about the new television series from Starz:

Lawless joins previously announced cast members Bruce Campbell (Ashley J. Williams), Ray Santiago (Pablo Simon Bolivar), Dana DeLorenzo (Kelly Maxwell) and Jill Marie Jones (Amanda Fisher).
The STARZ Original series “Ash vs Evil Dead” will be 10 half-hour episodes. Bruce Campbell will be reprising his role as Ash, the stock boy, aging lothario and chainsaw-handed monster hunter who has spent the last 30 years avoiding responsibility, maturity and the terrors of the EvilDead. When a Deadite plague threatens to destroy all of mankind, Ash is finally forced to face his demons –personal and literal. Destiny, it turns out, has no plans to release the unlikely hero from its “Evil” grip.
Raimi will direct the first episode of “Ash vs Evil Dead” that he wrote with Ivan Raimi (Darkman, Army of Darkness, Drag Me to Hell), Craig DiGregorio (“Workaholics,” “Chuck”) and Tom Spezialy (“Chuck,” “Reaper,” “Desperate Housewives”). Raimi will also serve as executive producer, along with Rob Tapert (Evil Dead, “Spartacus,” Xena: Warrior Princess”) and Bruce Campbell (Evil Dead, “Burn Notice”) along with Craig DiGregorio (“Workaholics,” “Chuck”) who will serve as executive producer/showrunner. Ivan Raimi will co-executive produce and Aaron Lam (“Spartacus”) will serve as producer.
