The History Channel released another Vikings video exclusive, “The Harsh Realities of Battle,” which focuses on the scenes from Episode 3.3 “Warrior’s Fate,” involving Porunn (Gaia Weiss) and Bjorn (Alexander Ludwig), and poor Torstein (Jefferson Hall). There’s also interviews with the cast.

Watch the 3-minute video featurette here below.

Spoilers from that episode from here on, so tread carefully!

Bjorn is conflicted because she is with child, but doesn’t want to dampen her enthusiasm for fighting. She is a shieldmaiden and “excited to get some recognition from battle.” He also has no real claim on her, spurring him to propose (she happily accepts, although I did wait with bated breath as she paused). That proposal was an inevitable jinx (to us viewers), her face sliced during that battle (but still alive at the end of the episode). Bjorn is crushed.

Rganar’s (Travis Fimmel) reaction was harsh but understandable, “You have the strength of a man, but the will of a little girl. I can’t believe you are my son.” Fimmel offers insight, “Children are the most important thing to Ragnar.”

The second part of the video is all about the suffering Torstein, who insisted he could fight, armless, and obviously on the brink of death. Clive Standen explains, “Torstein wants to die an honorable death. And to a viking, an honorable death is dying in battle.” Rollo was the compassionate one of this episode, giving his nephew some comfort after Ragnar’s harsh words, and dragging Torstein with him up a mountainside so he can have a shot at Valhalla.

It is unbelievable how intricate and complex the relationships between these characters are given that they were really considered to be barbarians during their time. Porunn just got a lot more interesting with the slice of a face, and watching how Bjorn and Ragnar act and react to her is something to look forward to.
