Tron is just that one film franchise that somehow finds a way to make use of its extra lives. Fans were excited to hear that a sequel, Tron: Legacy, would be coming, but it was met with mixed reviews and it barely met box office expectations. With the way the film ended there was hope that a Tron 3 would soon follow.
Since it’s 2010 release, talks of a sequel grew quieter with each passing year. Now a new report says not only is Tron 3 still alive, but it will shoot in Vancouver this fall. Hit the jump for more.
Rumor has it that thanks part to the profits being generated by the Marvel and soon to be Star Wars films, Disney got the idea to revive the idea of a Tron 3. Honestly it makes plenty of sense.
Now VanCity Buzz isn’t just some run of the mill fan blog, it is an actual news outlet. Badass Digest, who discovered the news, confirmed with a close source that the film was on, and that Tron: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski was back in it.
Garrett Hedlund is attached to return to reprise his character, but there is no word on whether or not Olivia Wilde will return. Bruce Boxleitner also had a role in the previous two films as Alan Bradley / Tron / Rinzler, but the report doesn’t mention his name. Fans will also remember that Cillian Murphy had an uncredited role as Edward Dillinger, Jr., head of the software design team for ENCOM and the son of former ENCOM Senior Executive Ed Dillinger, but there is no telling if he will appear to reprise that role in Tron 3.
Now Tron: Legacy was visually astonishing, and was backed by a terrific score composed by Daft Punk. However, the story and character development were certainly lacking despite a worthy performance from Hedlund and Wilde. Kosinski followed up Tron: Legacy with Oblivion, which was also beautiful to look at and also had a beautiful score, but the story just couldn’t hold the audience’s attention. So let’s just hope that this isn’t a recurring theme with Kosinski, who is in talks to direct Gran Turismo.
So what are your thoughts? Are you excited for Tron 3?
