Garrett Hedlund Sugggests ‘Tron 3’ May Not Be Dead After All

Tron 3 (rumored to be titled Tron: Ascension) was so close to production that stars Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde were expected to report on set in Vancouver in the Fall. However, with the disappointing box office performance of Tomorrowland, Disney decided to shut down the Tron sequel before it even entered production. Fans refused to believe that Tron 3 would never happen, and even started a petition to get it back into production.
Disney didn’t even mention at the D23 Expo earlier this year if they were still considering releasing Tron 3, but for those who are still holding out on hope of it getting made, Hedlund has an optimistic outlook. According to what was told to him, the project isn’t dead, but rather Disney is still trying to find the right story. More on this below.

‘Tron 3’ To Shoot This Fall In Vancouver

Tron is just that one film franchise that somehow finds a way to make use of its extra lives. Fans were excited to hear that a sequel, Tron: Legacy, would be coming, but it was met with mixed reviews and it barely met box office expectations. With the way the film ended there was hope that a Tron 3 would soon follow.
Since it’s 2010 release, talks of a sequel grew quieter with each passing year. Now a new report says not only is Tron 3 still alive, but it will shoot in Vancouver this fall. Hit the jump for more.

Disney In Depth: Tron: Uprising Review
|
 |

Tron: Uprising, an arrestingly-captivating new animated original series on the Disney XD channel, brings viewers back into the grid with the dynamic visuals, electrifying music and gripping storytelling that rekindled audiences with digital dazzle in Tron: Legacy.
Set between the original Tron and Tron: Legacy, Tron: Uprising focuses on mechanic-turned-renegade Beck (voiced by Elijah Wood), a deft programmer living in the stunning Argon City. Beck’s free-thinking society is soon threatened by the menacing General Tesler (Lance Henriksen), one of the evil CLU’s cohorts, who aims to take charge of the metropolis. Once his friend is “derezzed,†or the Tron version of someone being killed, Beck avenges his death by disguising himself as believed-to-be-dead hero Tron and inspiring a revolution. In the intense prologue special, “Beck’s Beginning,†we see this as almost an origins story, provided with heavy exposition to better understand the characters and storyline.

TRON Legacy
Netflix Streaming
DVD | Blu-Ray
Directed by Joseph Kosinski
Starring Jeff Bridges, Garrett Hedlund, Olivia Wilde, Beau Garrett, Michael Sheen, James Frain, Bruce Boxleitner, Daft Punk, Cillian Murphy
Walt Disney Pictures
Originally Released: December 17, 2010
TRON Legacy is a film that, for many of us, was a generation in waiting. Many of us who were children of the Eighties were floored with the richness and uniqueness of the original TRON film, sadly now quite dated (visually, though the story still stands up), as it was a statement of the budding tech generation we were becoming a part of. For decades, we waited for the potential of a sequel, and some of us lost all hope.
Then in 2008, something exciting happened at San Diego Comic-Con. Disney previewed new “test” footage in a trailer that was somewhat of a “proof-of-concept”. Then called TR2N, the sequel news set the internet on fire – as countless fans of the original movie enjoyed the fever of the news that another chapter was coming out. I’m sure even Tron Guy was amused.

Blu-ray Review: Tron: Legacy

Tron: Legacy/Tron: The Original Classic
5-Disc Blu-ray | 4-Disc Blu-ray | 2-Disc Blu-ray | DVD
Directed by Joseph Kosinski/Steven Lisberger
Starring Jeff Bridges, Olivia Wilde, Garrett Hedlund, Bruce Boxleitner
Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment
Released date: April 5, 2011
If you want to see my opinion of Tron: Legacy, go ahead and check out my original review of the film’s theatrical release. My opinion of the movie hasn’t really changed since I originally wrote the review. To sum up, it is a fun and visually amazing movie, but it is not as good as it could have been. However, now I’m here to talk about the Blu-ray version of Tron: Legacy, in all its five discs of glory, and I can’t recommend it enough because it looks great at home, and because it includes the Blu-ray version of Tron: The Original Classic. The transfer on both of the Blu-rays look amazing, and if you’ve got a high end system, this is going to be a disc that will show it off. The movie is shown in its IMAX aspect ratio, so it doesn’t quite fill a standard screen, but that doesn’t take anything away. I was blown away by how great Tron: Legacy looked at home. Unfortunately, I am not set up for home 3D yet, so I can’t speak to what that looks like, but I have to assume that this is going to be a film that takes full advantage of that technology.

The latest trailer for Disney‘s upcoming 3D release, Tron Legacy, the sequel to Tron , has finally been released on the internet, and this time, the clues of the teaser begin to move towards giving viewers and fans more of an idea of the story that will unfold in the film.
Watch the full trailer here below.
Fan feedback across the web, at a glance, seems to be highly positive– as it should be: the footage contained in this trailer is nothing short of breathtaking and, personally speaking, makes me very excited about seeing this movie. Now, while I do mention breathtaking, bear in mind this trailer is not only full of effects like the last two that had been released; in this teaser, we get more in touch with the two characters played by Jeff Bridges (Kevin Flynn and CLU2 of course) in the film, as well as the other characters.
Like most of you, I’ve been waiting for this sequel for many years, and so far all the teasers seem to indicate this movie might just match (or hopefully exceed) expectations.

SDCC 2010: ‘Tron Legacy’ New Footage Description + Trailer
|
 |

As a longtime fan of the original 1982 Tron, I was extremely excited to welcome a return to the Tron universe with Disney’s Tron Legacy panel at the 2010 San Diego Comic-Con. Moderator Patton Oswalt greeted attendees with a rousing “Welcome, Furries!” and reminded us that this is the third year Tron Legacy has been at Comic-Con, and joked that the plan is to show Tron Legacy in 5 minute increments at Comic-Con for the next 25 years. The footage started with a mini-documentary highlighting the cultural impact of Tron over the course of the last 27 years (including, incredulously, Tron on ice!).
Patton then introduced the panel: Director Joe Kosinski, producer Sean Bailey, original Tron creator Steven Lisberger, and stars Garrett Hedlund, Olivia Wilde, Michael Sheen, and original Tron stars Bruce Boxleitner and Jeff Bridges. Kosinski talked about his personal nostalgia with the original film, and the daunting challenge of producing a sequel.
