Before we get to the Bates Motel episode 5 review, let’s recap last week’s episode. Beware of spoilers!

“You betrayed mother. She needs to know,” Norman (Freddie Highmore) tells Dylan (Max Thieriot) after finding Caleb (Kenny Johnson) at his farm. Dylan had just finished patching Caleb up after a nasty fall and tearful confession filled with regret, when Norman showed up. Norma (Vera Farmiga) and the whole crew is in danger from the big players in town after Annika shows up, hands Norma a flash drive, and dies. Romero now has to investigate two dead girls who are connected to the Arcanum Club and that “missing” USB drive.

Bates Motel 3.5 “The Deal” review: Nestor Carbonell directs this episode which brings us to the halfway point. An aggressive car runs Norma off the road. It’s connected to that USB drive. The aggressive car comes with barely veiled threats. Guest alert bonanza! Kevin Rahm (Mad Men) is back again as Bob Paris plans to give the sheriff’s job away because Romero is not doing what he wants, which is to get back that flash drive. I really really want to know what is on that drive, almost more than Norma.

Ryan Hurst (Sons Of Anarchy) as Chick is back in this episode.

“Something bad happened to you. Wanna hug it out?” He’s so creepy. And awesome. He has a strange interaction and an offer for the twisted up inside Caleb.

Caleb: “What the hell is wrong with you man?”
Chick: “Everything.”

I can’t figure out if Chick is friend or foe. On this show, it’s always both. Every word out of his mouth is carefully constructed and unexpected.

Norma has a meeting with Bob Paris, hence the title, “The Deal.” I don’t know if Norma can handle herself. Luckily, Romero goes with her.

Norman thinks he told Norma all about Dylan and Caleb. Turns out he just thought he did. If you look at the clip below, you see Norman is really trying to have a family. It makes the future all the more tragic. The scene is mesmerizing when Dylan finally confesses. Norma’s reaction and the chain reaction of the others after is even better. This might be the thing that truly pushes Norman past the point of no return.

I think Dylan might be my favorite character.

Bates Motel airs Monday nights at 9pm ET on A&E.

  2. Dylan is the only sane person on the show. I’d like to say Emma is sane but then again she thinks it’s a good idea to date Norman when she’s seen first hand how messed up he is. And this Chick character is fantastic. I love this show. It continues to impress me week after week.

  3. LOVE Chick!
I guess I see Emma as so desperate to be in this family, plus for regular teens, she’s not a catch so maybe Norman is the best she’s gonna get (in her mind-I think she’s a little beauty).

  5. Emma is gorgeous! But I guess in the world of TV they’ve made her kind of an outcast because of her illness.
