Brad Bird is busy putting the final touches on Tomorrowland, and soon will have to do the press tour to help promote the film. But as soon as he is done with that, he will go to work on The Incredibles 2. The sequel was actually confirmed a year ago when Bob Iger made the announcement during an annual stockholder’s meeting. Of all the sequels and prequels in the Pixar library, fans are most excited for another Incredibles adventure.

However, with Bird busy working on Tomorrowland at the time the sequel was first announced, work on The Incredibles 2 wasn’t even close to starting, which tells us that the film won’t hit theaters for a while. Hit the jump to see where Bird is at with the script for the sequel.

In an interview with NPR (via The Playlist), Bird revealed that he is in the first stages of writing the script for The Incredibles 2:

“I’m just staring to write it, so we’ll see what happens.”

That really doesn’t give us much to go on, but it is something at least. Pixar is notorious for ironing out the story until they get it right.

However he also said “so we’ll see what happens.” This seems to tell us that he is only on board as a writer, at least for now. Bird is a familiar face over at Pixar, not only is he a member of the Pixar Brain Trust, but he also directed Ratatouille. Not only that but he also acted as minor characters in the Pixar movies he’s directed, voicing Edna ‘E’ Mode in The Incredibles and Ambrister Minion in Ratatouille. He is also one of the few directors who has successfully made the jump from animation to live-action. Before Tomorrowland, Bird made his live-action directorial debut with Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol, which grossed $695 million world wide.

There is no telling if he will sign on as director of The Incredibles 2 or if he will continue to direct live-action films. But if he had an itch to revisit animation again, what better project to do it with than one that already has a mythology created by him.

With Finding Dory opening in 2016, and the untitled Dia De Los Meurtos movie yet to be scheduled and possibly looking at a 2017 release, the earliest we could see The Incredibles 2 is in 2018.
