Sony Pictures Classics has just released the first trailer for Woody Allen‘s Irrational Man starring Joaquin Phoenix, Emma Stone, Jamie Blackley, and Parker Posey. In the film, Phoenix plays Abe Lucas, a habitually gloomy philosophy professor who can’t write, can’t teach, and “couldn’t remember the reason for living, and when I did it wasn’t convincing.” But when a young student (Stone) attends one of his classes, he finds new purpose in life. Based on the trailer, the film pretty much uses the same tropes and plot devices Allen has used before in his previous films. But Posey’s character could put a small twist on things.
Check out the trailer below.
A synopsis or plot description hasn’t even been released, and there doesn’t seem to be one floating around. Allen is very secretive when it comes to his work. But if you know Woody Allen films, then you know he is really living up to the mantra “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” Too many times have we seen these kinds of films from him before. However, Allen doesn’t short himself or his audiences with his cast, and as per usual, his films touts a stellar one. It looks like Parker Posey could be the true star of the film.
We’ll just have to see if their performance can carry the film that Allen has done over and over and over again.
Irrational Man will make its official premiere over at the Cannes Film Festival this year, and make its theatrical debut on July 17.
