No one ever wants to find out that their flight has been delayed, forcing them to figure out different ways to keep their quickly numbing brain occupied until things get back on schedule. So here’s a slice of fried gold life tip for all of you: if you’re going to end up getting stuck at an airport, make sure that Broadway performers are stuck at said airport with you!
The casts of both The Lion King and Aladdin Broadway shows were traveling from New York to Orlando when their flight was delayed. Instead of sitting around playing Sudoku or whatever it is kids do to keep themselves busy these days, they used their talents to lighten the mood in the terminal. Just one Broadway cast singing their songs would be a pleasant surprise for anyone else stuck in an airport (aside from those without souls, of course), but when two casts from different productions are present? It can mean only one thing: a sing-off!
It begins with the Lion King cast singing one of the many familiar songs associated with their production. Instead of countering with another classic tune, the Aladdin crew, led by Tony Award-winning Genie actor James Monroe Iglehart (whose tribute to Genie counterpart Robin Williams can be watched right here), went full rap battle in playful riposte. And it continued from there. You can check out the video of the two sides trading lyrical blows below.
This isn’t the first time something like this has happened, either, in case you were wondering. The cast of The Lion King has also performed on a New York City subway, and the Australian Lion King cast has performed while on an airplane. Some folks appear to be annoyed by such a musical outburst—those people being the aforementioned soulless—while the rest appreciate a nice uplifting break from real life.
