You know that saying “You are your own worst enemy?” Well, no one knows that as well as the guy who’s currently calling himself Sebastian. You might know him from his exploits a decade ago. But this story is unfolding in the newest installment: Fight Club 2 #2. Because if you crack the candy(ass) coating you’ll get a long, dark look at Tyler Durden lurking right below the surface. He is buried inside, right? Hunh, well maybe not.
If you find yourself unfamiliar with Chuck Palahniuk‘s Fight Club then shame on you, there’s really no excuse for that kind of behavior. When we are done here I expect you to go grab a copy and read it. And no, watching the movie does not count. Because as sure as I am sitting here listening to Filter, you NEED to embrace the awesomeness that is Chuck P. So much twisted goodness that you won’t know what to do. But I digress. Let’s chat about this comic, shall we?
We learned in the premier issue that Tyler’s…I mean Sebastian’s…wife Marla has been jacking with his medication. The fun fact here is that those meds control one of the most sociopathic minds that has ever existed. Sebastian’s alter ego is a maniacal killer who has always sought chaos on an epic level. And, to make a long story (Fight Club) short, he’s pretty damn good at it. A house fire leads to distress for both of them as it seems their son was burned to death. Just like Tyler, I mean Sebastian’s parents. This fact does not go unnoticed.
But as twisted as it seems, Sebastian knows Tyler. He knows him well. So he sets a plan in action that could very well end them both. With Marla’s assistance he sets out on his journey of revenge and forgiveness. The story drops off at the perfect place, leaving the reader wanting…no, needing more. The tension has built, the pieces are moving, the game has begun.
Oh, Chuck. How I both adore and loathe you. Doling out tidbits of story month after month, you have become my pusher. And your stories are my drug. I’m already fiending for my next fix, it’s almost unbearable. And to make matters worse for me, Cameron Stewart is utterly f#&king amazing! Between the pointed symbolism and the more modern styled mixed media, this comic captures your attention in a myriad of ways. He can be both blatant and subtle, sometimes in the same panel! How dare these two turn out a monthly series and force me to wait weeks for the next issue!?!?
But alas, you may not have been exposed to this series or maybe not even the book that preceded it. If so, count yourself fortunate that you aren’t plagued by the incessant need to read more of it. Or if it is known to you then you most likely feel my pain. You know the aching, the suffering, that the reader faces whilst trying to live their mundane life, one mediocre day at a time. Just waiting, anticipating, the next release from this series. Or maybe you are one of ones who loved the film but never read the book. If that’s the case, this is far better than the movie, just like virtually every book. But, hey, if you want to judge a book by its movie…
Don’t.
