We learned last month that Marvel and Sony had found their new Peter Parker aka Spider-Man in 19-year-old Tom Holland. Now, word comes that Marisa Tomei has been cast as Peter’s Aunt May in the planned Spider-Man reboot.
Variety reports that their exclusive sources gave them the scoop that the My Cousin Vinny actress was offered the role late last week, but that Sony and Marvel had no comment at this time on the casting.
In the Marvel comics universe, young Peter is raised by his Aunt May and Uncle Ben.
Jon Watts (Cop Car) will direct the next Spider-Man installment, which will be the first Spidey feature after the recent Sony/Marvel deal to bring Spider-Man, a Marvel character which Sony has had the film rights to, into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (spearheaded by Marvel Studios, which is owned by Disney).
Spider-Man is expected to make his MCU debut in Captain America: Civil War, which opens in theaters on May 6, 2016. The new Spider-Man film (rumored to be titled either Spider-Man: The New Avenger or The Spectacular Spider-Man) has a theatrical release date of July 28, 2017.
Tomei, who won an Oscar for My Cousin Vinny, stars in the upcoming Amy Schumer comedy Trainwreck and will have a recurring role on Fox TV’s second season of Empire. She’s also currently filming The Big Short with Christian Bale and Ryan Gosling.
