Hasbro, in collaboration with HBO and USAopoly, announced today a new variant of the board game Risk set in the fantasy world of Game of Thrones. The game will feature two maps — one of Westeros and one of Essos — and allow players to take control of the powerful noble houses, such as the Baratheon and Lannister. Finally, fans of the series from author George R.R. Martin can indeed take Daenarys Targaryen out of Essos and have her conquer everyone and claim the Iron Throne.
This special edition of Risk includes new rules of game play featuring unique cards. There will be character cards that will allow the player to use special combat maneuvers unique to their house. Territory cards will allow you to stake claims to lands you own in addition to your custom army pieces featuring likenesses of the houses sigil, such as a direwolf for the Starks. There will also be “Maester Cards” which allow the player special moves during play.
Rule sets feature ways for players to engage in staged battles from the book and television show such as the “War of the Five Kings” for 3-5 players. The game boards can be combined to engage in a full-on giant battle for a 7-player variant. Also included will be gold coins to purchase advantages, objective cards to aid in the pursuit of the Iron Throne, and some other items, such as foiled sigils for the houses that any fan of the series can appreciate.
All together the set will include: 2 game boards, 315 army pieces, 7 seats of power, 7 player boards, 187 cards, 63 special unit tokens, 75 gold dragon coins, 9 dice, and 1 rule book. The game will start selling in August at a retail price of $74.95.
I don’t know about you but I can’t wait for House Stark to finally get vengeance and conquer the entire world…even if it’s only on the Risk board.
