If you have a PS4 lying around and are interested in a free, deceptively addictive, soccer (football) game featuring rocket-powered vehicles, then it might be a good time for you to get Playstation Plus. For the month of July (which means you have very, very little time left) as part of being a paying Plus member, you get to download a few games for free every month and this month’s Rocket League is very much worth the effort.
A sequel to Psyonix’s Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars from 2011, Rocket League is a simple concept game that offers tons of replayability and fun. You drive rocket-boosted cars, trucks, or a PS4 exclusive “Sweet Tooth” van from ‘Twisted Metal’ fame. The action takes place around an enclosed soccer pitch. From there, it’s basically soccer. Your goal is to pass, shoot, and defend and score more goals than your opponent. The game features up to 4-player split screen and up to 8-player online multiplayer. You can play offline in a Season Mode, online in ranked matches. Your vehicles are very customizable and feature over a billion (literally) different creative combinations. I personally like the fez. Fezzes are cool.
One of the features I’m excited about is that eventually, you will have a lot more cross play options with your friends on PC. The game was released simultaneously on Valve’s Steam product for PC gamers. Sony, Steam, and Psyonix are working together to offer more and more cross play features. As of this moment, PS4 and PC friends can randomly be thrown together via the games matchmaking tools, but developers are very actively working on incorporating more and more cross play in the weeks ahead. Also, it was recently announced that some new maps and DLC will be rolling out for the game in the next few weeks.
Check out a trailer for the game and some screenshots here below. Meanwhile, keep practicing your bicycle kicks and rocket-boosted ball passing skills. Grab Rocket League for free at the Playstation store with your PSPlus while you can or grab it on Steam.
