Stephen Amell is no stranger to fighting supervillains. For three seasons on The CW hit show Arrow, Amell has dealt with nefarious foes like Malcolm Merlyn (John Barrowman), Slade Wilson (Manu Bennett), and Ra’s Al Ghul (Matt Nable). But he ain’t never met anyone like WWE superstar Stardust, aka Cody Rhodes. After months of warring on Twitter, Amell showed up as a guest star on Monday Night Raw in Seattle, Washington, to confront the painted face wrestler. By 10:30pm, Amell was in the ring having security pull him off Stardust, and soon the match was made for WWE’s mid-year blockbuster event, Summerslam; this year emanating from Brooklyn’s Barclay’s Center.
Watch the confrontation video (around minute 1), and Amell get his match in the videos below.
It all started on Monday, May 29th with Amell sitting ringside. Stardust got in his face and screamed at him, causing Amell to rise up, and the feud has been raging on social media ever since. In the past few weeks Stardust has routinely dropped hints and threats to Amell mocking his Arrow character, while calling out for someone to “be my hero.” He even changed the name of his finishing move from Cross Rhodes to the Queen’s Crossbow (Arrow’s real name is Oliver Queen). While taunting Amell on social media, he’s been feuding with high flying superstar Neville whose finishing move is called the Red Arrow. After Neville defeated Bad News Barrett, he was attacked by Stardust, who then turned his attention to Amell sitting ringside. They got nose to nose before Stardust facepalmed him. Amell charged the ring, leaping over the ropes, and speared Stardust before security got in his way. Then backstage, Amell and Neville issued the challenge to Stardust and Barrett for a tag team match at Summerslam. When on-screen authority figure Triple H said no, Amell agreed to sign legal paperwork to allow the match. Green and Red Arrows unite!
Amell is an avid wrestling fan, regularly seen with his replica title belt on Facebook, during fantasy football season. When WWE started employing guest hosts a few years back, Amell pleaded for a chance to be in the WWE ring. If you haven’t watched Arrow and are concerned about the actor’s well being against trained wrestlers, just watch some of Amell’s training sessions, including Parkour on YouTube. Seriously, the guy could be a WWE superstar the day Arrow ends it run. Stardust (Cody Rhodes) is the son of the late great Hall of Famer Dusty Rhodes, and is an avid comic book fan. His Stardust character debuted last year.
Summerslam is a special 4-hour show this year, and the Amell & Neville vs. Stardust & Barrett tag match will join a card main evented by former UFC/WWE Champion Brock Lesnar against The Undertaker. Summerslam takes place at Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn, NY on Sunday night, August 23rd at 7:00pm ET. The event will be on PPV for $54.99 or on WWE’s streaming service, WWE Network for $9.99 a month. Win, lose, or draw; Amell returns to The CW on Wednesday night, October 7th for the premiere of Arrow Season 4.
