Sometimes, you have to marvel at the behind-the-scenes talent of some television shows. We all know that The Strain could not be as freaky as it is, without the Creature FX team, that design the creepy little blind “feelers,” the humans transforming to strigoi, and of course, the various incarnations of the king of the vamps – The Master.
Check out how they do it in the video below.
Doug Jones (Pan’s Labyrinth), who played the ancient before the season 1 Master, is used to clocking severe makeup hours for all the creatures he has been. Steve Newburn, Creature FX Supervisor (cool job title!) said, “We kinda set a record for him with 18 appliances on him, covering head to toe, about a 5-hour application.
It takes a special kind of patience to stay still, while people apply parts and makeup to you, as well as to be the artist. I’ve never heard of it taking less than hours.
I also agree about the younger, cooler Master in the form of Jack Kesy. It is exactly what I thought when the torch was passed to Bolivar. I would have chosen him over Eichorst (Richard Sammel) too. Even Masters want to be rock stars.
The Strain airs Sunday nights at 10pm ET on FX.

The Strain season 2 synopsis:
ABOUT THE STRAIN
The transformation has begun.
It can no longer be denied — New York City is rapidly falling to an evil epidemic, and no one is coming to its rescue. Its citizens must fight or die.
Dr. Ephraim Goodweather and his unlikely allies tried to take down the embodiment of this evil — the Master — and failed. Now Eph and Dr. Nora Martinez concentrate on creating a biological weapon to wipe out the creatures, while Abraham Setrakian searches for an ancient book he hopes will reveal the strigoi’s entire history…and possibly a way to kill them. Meanwhile, the Master is out for revenge, unleashing new and even more terrifying breeds of bloodthirsty creatures. They need to find a way to defeat him before the infection spreads too far and becomes irreparable…before they become monsters themselves.
