Movie Title Typos
Making Movies Better by Subtracting One Letter
Hardcover | Kindle Edition
Written and illustrated by Austin Light
Chronicle Books
Release Date: September 22nd, 2015

It sounds easy right? Take a letter out of a movie title to make a different movie altogether. For Movie Title Typos: Making Movies Better by Subtracting One Letter, Austin Light combined two passions — art and movies — to create a really fun little book. While he entered into “Inktober” (one drawing a day for 31 days), he got the “remove a letter from movie titles” idea from Reddit and married the two. He shared his drawings to Reddit, and the rest as they say is history. He creation quickly went viral, and even drew the attention of major film stars like Robert Downey Jr. and the late great Wes Craven.

A little bit over 100 pages, Light provides 55 original drawings depicting famous movies, altered ever so slightly by the subtraction of a single letter. If you’re confused, I’ll provide a few examples: “It’s a Wonderful Lie” is the story of a boy who finds out Santa Claus is real, but a total jerk! The drawing revolves around Santa laughing as he trips an elf out the door. One of my favorites is “T: The Extraterrestrial” about a boy who meets an angry jewelry clad alien who pities the fool (haha). I also loved “My Big Fat Geek Wedding,” which features a happy couple shrouded by Boba Fett, The Green Lantern, and other characters. I don’t want to spoil the surprises for you, but suffice to say, most will make you chuckle and some will have you roaring.

The best part of this quirky little book and the idea behind it, is that it’s addictive. This is totally the type of thing that would keep my friends and me up for hours at a late night diner over countless cups of coffee. It can become a game you play with the movie lovers around you. I envision this book, because of it’s small stature, being something that sits out on coffee tables to stir conversation, or is brought on family trips to cure car ride boredom. I’m already thinking of my own movie titles minus a letter, although my complete lack of artistic ability means I may need to bring my son in to help me. Light even asks for suggestions in the introduction — go to MovieTitlesTypos.com. Here’s a few more quick ones, “Night of the Living Dad” about an insomniac father whose kids keep waking him, and “No Country for Old Me” about a man who’s had enough with civilization and plans to move out to sea.

Movie Title Typos by Austin Light, released on September 22, 2015 by Chronicle Books, is available at Chronicle Books and Amazon. Buy it and follow the helpful guide on the back cover: The rules are simple. Remove a letter. Make a movie better.

Synopsis:

In Movie Title Typos, artist Austin Light removes just one letter from a well-known movie title to inspire a surprising and hilarious visual scenario. There’s Obocop (a robotic police officer works through his PTSD by playing smooth jazz), T. (a boy meets a jewelry-clad alien who pities fools), Harry Otter, The Princess and the Fro, Finding Emo, Pup Fiction, and many more. A massive viral hit when he first posted sketches of the work online (1.2 million hits in the first 6 hours), Light has created new full-color illustrations for all, with the majority of the book’s content never before seen on the Web. Here is a parallel universe glimpse at could-have-been films possibly better””definitely funnier””than the originals.
