Sandra Bullock

Ocean’s 11 films are pretty much male dominated, with George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, and the rest of the crew pulling off some sort of elaborate heist to steal millions from casinos, save themselves from jail time, or get revenge on casino owners who hurt one of their own. Sure there were some females in the film franchise, but they didn’t really get into the art of the heist. All three movies were directed by Steven Soderbergh, and for the most part, all of them were pretty entertaining to watch. But it was been eight years since the release of Ocean’s 13, and it looks like there are some who believe that a film like this could work again, but this time it will be Sandra Bullock who will lead a team of women to pull of an insane heist. More on the story below.

The Playlist has the exclusive on this news. According to them, “the project was initiated last year by the power trio of late producer Jerry Weintraub, “˜Ocean’s’ trilogy director Steven Soderbergh, and the franchise’s main star, Clooney.” They have apparently already hired Olivia Milch (Queen & Country, Little Women), who has been working on the screenplay for the past few months.

The new film has actually been in development since 2014, but hit a speed bump when Weintraub past away this summer. But the project remains in development to this day, with Milch recently turning in a draft. No plot details were given, but seeing how the film is still in development, that comes as no surprise. The site also says there is a chance that Clooney could reprise his role as Danny Ocean for a cameo appearance. If we are going to see Danny Ocean in the film, one has to wonder what kind of banter he and Bullock’s character would have. It wouldn’t be the first time the two have appeared together on screen. The last time we saw Clooney and Bullock share screentime was in Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity.

Why the reports on the film haven’t broken onto the internet for public consumption until now is unclear, but the site says that it may have been right under our noses all along. According to them, there have been “traces of it have been on the Internet for a few months,” with Amy Pascal’s leaked e-mails referencing the film, but suggesting that Sony move faster on the all-female Ghostbusters film instead.

An all-female Ocean’s 11 film would make for a very interesting watch on screen. Of course that would also depend on who they can get cast for the film. Based on their roles in Heat, we know that Bullock and Melissa McCarthy have great chemistry, so there may be a chance that they could go that route. I could see Clooney and Soderbergh trying to replicate the same Ocean’s 11 formula by locking in three A-list female actors to the main trio (much like how Clooney, Pitt, and Damon were in the male version of the trilogy).

The report adds that Gary Ross (The Hunger Games) has signed on to direct this film. Ross is one of Soderbergh’s closest friends and allies. It would make sense that the former Ocean‘s trilogy director pass the baton to his closest confidant. Ross is currently working on The Free State Of Jones starring Matthew McConaughey, so once he finishes that, he is expected to move onto the all-female Ocean’s 11 film.

We will keep you posted as soon as new developments come in.
