Deadpool

As if you didn’t see this one coming. Deadpool 2 is happening. Fans and critics have expressed overwhelmingly positive opinions on the film, and that kind of support only gives more of a reason for 20th Century Fox to give the greenlight for a sequel to happen.

THR confirms that Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, who wrote Deadpool, are writing the script for a sequel. This kind of news shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone. The film has a strong show of support from fans and critics alike and is on track to gross an estimated $65 to $70 million at the box office during this four-day weekend. That is pretty huge for an R-rated comedy. While Ryan Reynolds, director Tim Miller, Reese, and Wernick, fought hard to get this film to happen, much of the reason this film is happening is because of that concept video that was leaked last year. Whether or not that came from a fan or someone within the creative team camp is unclear, but Deadpool is on its way, and we are at the point that we are talking about a sequel. Of course, if the film doesn’t perform well at the box office, the studio could pull the plug on the sequel.

The report adds that Miller isn’t signed on to direct the sequel. However, the studio is making an effort to keep the creative team together.

As to what the sequel could be about, well that is too early to tell. Reynolds has talked about how he would like to see an X-Force film happen in the near future. In fact, Reynolds is making X-Force a priority. And depending on its success, there is an off chance that we could be seeing Deadpool be more involved in the X-Men film universe.

Deadpool also stars Morena Baccarin, Ed Skrein, T.J. Miller, Yorick Van Wageningen, Gina Carano, and Brianna Hildebrand. The film opens in theaters February 12th.

Here’s the official synopsis:

Based upon Marvel Comics’ most unconventional anti-hero, DEADPOOL tells the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego Deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humor, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life.
