New ‘Harry Potter’ Book On The Way

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Book

If you’re a Harry Potter fanatic who’s struggled to fill the immense void left when the final movie based on author J.K Rowling‘s main book series came and went almost five years ago now, you’re probably pretty excited these days. Not only is there a new movie on the way later this year, but a new stage play that will actually continue the story of Potter himself titled Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is also set to open this summer.

Unfortunately for most fans, they won’t get to see said stage play—at least not when it’s first released, anyway—because it’s being performed in London’s West End at the Palace Theatre. Perhaps it will do well and eventually branch out, but those anxious to take in this new story aren’t going to want to wait, anxiously hoping they’ll get to see the play someday. Thankfully, and very smartly, it’s been revealed that there will be another (quite fitting) way for fans to enjoy Cursed Child: as a new book.

You can find more information below.

It was announced on the Pottermore website that print and digital versions of the book will be published after the play’s world premiere this summer. The only catch is, it’s not a book like the previous installments in the series. The story being told in the play hasn’t (yet) been adapted into an official novelization; this book will instead include the rehearsal script used for the preview performances of the play. Still, it’s a new Potter story you won’t have to travel to London to get.

This script might change between the preview performances and the premiere several weeks later in late July, but the Rehearsal Edition of the book will eventually be replaced with a Definitive Collector’s Edition that contains the official script.

Below is an official description of the story, which picks up just after the Epilogue from the final book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, which saw Harry 19 years after the Battle of Hogwarts standing on Platform 9 3/4 waving good-bye to his children as they went off to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, just as he did so many years before.

It was always difficult being Harry Potter and it isn’t much easier now that he is an overworked employee of the Ministry of Magic, a husband and father of three school-age children.

While Harry grapples with a past that refuses to stay where it belongs, his youngest son Albus must struggle with the weight of a family legacy he never wanted. As past and present fuse ominously, both father and son learn the uncomfortable truth: sometimes, darkness comes from unexpected places.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is based on a new story by Rowling, Jack Thorne, and John Tiffany, and is reportedly staged in two parts, due to the “epic nature of the story.” But, while it’s a new tale from the Harry Potter universe, author J.K. Rowling has made it clear that it is not considered part of her 7-book novel series, which ended with the final book in 2007.

The author took to Twitter to clarify that this new book is not a new novel in the series, but rather just a printing of the play’s script.

The printed script for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child will be released this year on July 31 (which is also Harry Potter’s birthday).
