Sony’s plans to share Spider-Man with Marvel were revealed during the studio’s hacking scandal. It would soon be confirmed that there was such a deal in place, and that the Webslinger would make his official MCU debut in Captain America: Civil War. We then found out that Tom Holland would be taking on the role of Spider-Man for Civil War and future solo films, and that Jon Watts would direct the first solo movie.
Still, we know very little about the reboot other than who’s starring in it and who’s directing. However, it looks as though Sony may have accidentally revealed the title to the new Spider-Man reboot. Check out what the title could be below.
The BBC (via Empire) recently discovered that Sony Pictures has registered the domain named SpiderManHomecomingTheMovie.com, which may suggest that the title of the film cold be Spider-Man: Homecoming or something very much like that. Clicking on that link will take you to the Sony Pictures home page. Still, neither studio has confirmed the title to the Spider-Man reboot. We should’ve taken into account that domain names cannot be considered as the official title for a film. Of course, this is how the interwebs figured out that Skyfall would be the title for Bond 23.
As for the significance of Homecoming, the title refers to The Amazing Spider-Man issue #252, which sees Spider-Man, who is now wearing the black suit that would later become Venom, return from the Secret Wars. However, that story arc was a huge comic book event in of itself as it saw Marvel’s greatest heroes like Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, the Fantastic Four, and some of the X-Men fight villains like Doctor Doom, Doctor Octopus, the Enchantress, Kang the Conqueror, Klaw, Lizard, Ultron, Volcana, and the Wrecking Crew. It would be an unfortunate waste of a storyline if Sony and Marvel explained that this is how Spider-Man existed all this time and that he choose Civil War to make his first major appearance in the MCU.
We know that Watts’s reboot will draw inspiration from John Hughes films, and with the title sharing the name of the traditional high school dance, it would seem likely that the film could have more than one meaning while also telling us when the film could take place. Of course, that is just speculation.
It’s not likely that we will see the Black Suit Spider-Man considering that Sony has no plans of introducing the Venom character as a villain in their latest reboot of the Spider-Man franchise. Still, don’t be surprised to see Spider-Man and Venom fight at some point in time.
