Project Scorpio

To kick off their E3 2016 briefing, Microsoft announced a new slim model of the Xbox One called the Xbox One S. New console offering announcements were expected leading up to E3, so this was no big shock, but it was not the mysterious “Project Scorpio” that had been rumored. No, Microsoft saved that one for last.

To close out their presentation, Microsoft shared a video for Scorpio, which they believe will be the most powerful console ever created when it is released during the 2017 holiday season. The big question is, is this a good thing…or is it a very bad thing?

Read more and check out the video below.

Here’s a description of Project Scorpio:

Coming Holiday 2017, Project Scorpio will be the most powerful console ever created, with 6 teraflops of GPU delivering a premier console gaming experience including true 4K gaming and high fidelity virtual reality. Project Scorpio will join the Xbox One family and coexist alongside Xbox One and Xbox One S and all of your Xbox One games and accessories are compatible.

Now, obviously more powerful is never really a bad thing. But the Xbox One just launched in 2013. Releasing something this much more powerful than the console that just launched a few years ago feels way too soon. It’s huge that all Xbox One games will still be compatible on all of the consoles, but games made for Scorpio likely won’t be nearly as good on your suddenly old One.

We’ll have to wait to find out more about Project Scorpio, especially what it’s going to cost and if Microsoft will offer some sort of trade-in deal to make it more appealing to upgrade so quickly. It is still well over a year away, after all. But at the moment it’s hard not to think what’s the point of even bothering with consoles anymore? I’ve always personally planned to eventually get a gaming PC but haven’t been able to afford it just yet, so the cheaper console has always been the easier way to play. But if this goes bad, you might just see a mass of faithful console gamers finally making the leap up.

Are you excited or nervous about Project Scorpio?
