Spider-Man: Homecoming isn’t the only film about the Webslinger that Sony Pictures is currently working on. Sony Animation Pictures will be responsible for a currently untitled Spider-Man animated film that the studio is working on. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller have both worked on the film in a creative capacity, both having written the treatment, with Lord writing the script, and both will produce. Many expected that the two would eventually be named as directors of the film, but then came word that they would direct the Han Solo movie. While this might have stalled the production of the animated film about the webslinger, it appears that Sony has found its director.
New reports say Bob Persichetti will direct the Spider-Man animated movie. More on the story below.
THR was the first to confirm Persichetti’s hiring. In addition to that, they add that Amy Pascal and Avi Arad will also produce alongside Miller and Lord.
As usual, we don’t know much about the film, and the studio will not reveal much if anything at all. There is a rumor going around that this Spider-Man will be Miles Morales and not Peter Parker, but that remains to be seen. If that is the case, it would be a welcome progressive character selection. Morales is half-black and half-Hispanic, introduced several years ago as a new Spider-Man as a part of the Ultimate Universe. Donald Glover, who voiced the character in the Ultimate Spider-Man Web Warriors, series will be a part of the live-action version, but my guess is that they will go with someone else if they do choose to go with Morales as the Spider-Man of this film.
Persichetti has been working in animation for the past several years. He has had a hand in Disney films like Hercules, Mulan, Treasure Planet, The Emperor’s New Groove, and Fantasia 2000, but has also worked on CG films for Dreamworks Animation like Shrek 2 and Puss In Boots,. His most recent effort includes The Little Prince – which utilizes both CG and Stop-Motion animation. So whatever the film ends up using, it is pretty safe to say that he’s pretty well versed in the top three.
It’s hard to say what the untitled film could be about and which Spider-Man they end up using, although it makes more sense to use Morales as to avoid any sort of confusion it might cause since Tom Holland is playing Peter Parker in Spider-Man: Homecoming.
This project was officially introduced early last year, and was hinted at during the Sony e-mail hacking scandal, revealing that Sony was interested in releasing an animated Spider-Man comedy movie.
The Untitled Spider-Man Animated Movie won’t open until December 21st, 2018.
